The BFI was founded in 1933 and is a charity governed by a Royal Charter. Combining cultural, creative and industrial roles, the institute brings together the BFI National Archive and BFI Reuben Library, film distribution, exhibition and education at BFI Southbank and BFI IMAX, publishing, and festivals.

The BFI’s partnership with Calling the Shots included the generation of raw data on the production, personnel, and box-office data of certified British films from the year 2000-2015.

The BFI awards Lottery funding to film production, distribution, education, audience development and market intelligence and research. BFI Research provides research data and market intelligence to anyone with an interest in the UK film industry and film culture. Each year all findings in the BFI Statistical Yearbook, and throughout the year we produce a range of official statistics.
